What Makes a Safe Door High-Quality?

When most people think about safes, they imagine thick doors, sturdy locks, and impenetrable construction. But not all safe doors offer the same level of security, and what’s behind the door is just as important as what you can see from the outside. The design, materials, and engineering of the door are some of the most critical factors that determine a safe’s ability to protect your valuables

Let’s break down the key components that separate a high-quality safe door from a vulnerable one.

Safe Door Materials

The first and most obvious feature to consider in a safe door is the steel itself. Steel thickness is typically measured in gauges—the lower the number, the thicker the steel. Thicker steel provides greater resistance to forced entry methods like prying and drilling.

But steel thickness isn’t the only variable. How that steel is constructed matters, too. Solid steel plates offer superior strength compared to laminated layers. Laminated steel may save on manufacturing costs, but it significantly reduces the door’s resistance to attacks.

Another often overlooked element is the fill material within the door. Fill can range from low-strength foams to high-density materials like concrete or proprietary blends. While heavier materials like cement offer better protection against drilling, they also add weight, which can limit how much steel can be used overall. American Security’s DryLight blend is a perfect example of how using a lightweight yet strong fill allows for more steel in both the door and the body, offering superior protection without the weight penalty.

Locking Mechanisms for Safe Doors

When we talk about locking mechanisms, we’re not referring to the type of lock you see on the outside—whether mechanical or electronic—but rather what’s happening behind the scenes.

A robust locking mechanism will include hardened steel components and advanced anti-tamper technology. Look for safes that include features such as:

  • Hardplates: This helps to deflect or break drill bits attempting to reach the locking mechanism. American Security’s patented active hardplate, when tampered with, engages a series of pins that drive into the locking bar, preventing the door from being opened.
  • Glass relockers: These trigger additional internal locking if tampered with.
  • Advanced bolt designs: A great example of this is American Security’s Active 4x Locking System, which engages the bolts in multiple directions for maximum resistance to pry attacks.

These internal defenses make it significantly harder for intruders to compromise the safe through brute force or precision drilling.

For the locks themselves, you want to check to see if the product has been tested and certified. For example, many American Security locks are UL-rated, meaning they’ve undergone rigorous testing to get the stamp of approval from Underwriters Laboratories.

Most biometric lock options don’t offer the same level of protection as a mechanical or electronic lock. They’re often unreliable and could make it harder for you to access your safe during an emergency where you need to act fast. This can be due to your fingerprint having debris or a cut, which prohibits the technology from recognizing you as an authorized user.

Additional Key Features of Safe Doors

The lock and material used for a safe door are obvious components to consider. However, there are a few other factors that can be easily forgotten about when you’re selecting the right safe for your valuables.

Bolt Work

Bolt work refers to the number and configuration of locking bolts that secure the door when closed. A higher number of bolts generally equates to stronger protection, but placement matters just as much.

The most secure safes use four-way bolt work, meaning the bolts extend on all four sides of the door: top, bottom, left, and right. This greatly reduces the chance of successful prying attacks, particularly on larger doors.

Hinge Design

Hinges are another potential vulnerability—unless they’re built properly. Many low-quality safes can be infiltrated simply by cutting or removing the hinges. That’s why high-quality safes include internal dead bars or other mechanisms to hold the door in place even if the hinges are compromised.

American Security safe doors are engineered so that even if the external hinges are cut off, the door cannot be removed. This makes it extremely difficult for burglars to access the interior of our safes.

Door Size and Overall Construction

Size can be deceptive. A large door may look more secure, but if it lacks sufficient bolt coverage, heavy-duty materials, or if it’s mounted on a weak body, it can be a liability. On the other hand, a smaller safe door with strong steel, a four-way locking system, and high-quality fill material may be significantly more secure.

And let’s not forget the body of the safe. No matter how advanced the door is, if the body is made of thin metal or poorly reinforced, it becomes the path of least resistance. A door’s strength is only as good as the frame that supports it. This emphasizes the importance of evaluating a safe’s steel thickness before you make your final decision.

Real World Burglary Stories

You can see our safe door design in action in a recent news story where one of our CF safes was put to the test at a jeweler’s establishment. You can definitely see where the burglars tried to gain access but failed to get even close to opening the door.

CF7236 Safe withstanding 800K Burglary

Burglars will naturally attack a safe door first, so you want to make sure your model has been tried and tested against pry and drill attempts. We always have our safes undergo burglary testing, whether that be in-house at our manufacturing facility or through industry-leading laboratories like UL or ETL.

Invest in The First Line of Defense: A Reliable Safe Door

Your safe door is your first—and often last—line of defense against theft, tampering, and unauthorized access. From steel gauge and construction to internal mechanisms and bolt configuration, every component plays a role in how well your safe performs when it matters most.

AMSEC BF Series: What Makes These Safes Durable

If you’re someone who’s searching for a versatile and durable safe, you’ve come to the right place. The AMSEC BF safe series not only offers flexibility, but it also provides top-tier security since it’s the only UL-rated high-security home safe on the market.

Let’s uncover how this safe has achieved this industry-leading recognition by going over what it’s made out of, what this UL rating means, and what customization options are available that can help tailor the product to suit your needs/preferences.

What Are the AMSEC BF Safes Made Out Of?

The AMSEC BF safe product lineup is constructed with thick steel and uses fire clay for fire resistance. With a 2-5/8” thick steel body and weighing between 288-690 lbs (depending on the model you choose), these safes can hold up against forced entry and/or natural disasters.

Our BF safes are all proudly made in the USA, so you can rest assured that American Security prioritizes quality and security for your precious valuables.

BF Safe Burglary Protection

BF safes are built with serious security in mind. In addition to their thick steel bodies, each safe features a ½” solid steel plate door, three massive 1” diameter solid steel chrome-plated locking bolts, and a full-length dead bar that locks deep into the body. All of these components effectively prevent someone from successfully prying and breaking into the safe’s interior. This has been proven successful through the rigorous testing required for these safes to receive a UL RSC Level I security rating, resulting in the BF safes being the only UL-rated high-security home safes on the market.

Heavy-duty steel hinges add another layer of defense, reinforcing the safe against forced entry. With this level of construction, you can trust that access remains strictly limited to you and those you authorize.

BF Safe Fire Protection

The BF safe series isn’t just built to withstand break-ins—it’s also engineered to protect against fire. The BF1512, BF1716, and BF2116 models feature a UL fire rating of 60 minutes at 1700°F, while the BF3416 holds an ETL certification for 60 minutes at 1200°F, providing additional reassurance from a trusted lab.

To earn either of these ratings, each safe must endure a full hour inside a controlled furnace, with the internal temperature staying below 350°F—the critical point at which paper begins to char.

This high level of fire resistance is made possible by the safe’s robust fire clay and steel construction. But that’s not all: BF safes are also equipped with intumescent door seals, which expand under heat to block smoke and heat from entering the interior, adding yet another layer of fire protection for your cherished belongings.

Customization & Warranty Options for a BF Safe

One of the advantages of choosing a BF safe is the ability to tailor it to your specific needs and style. From color choices to interior configurations, here are a few ways you can make your safe truly your own.

Color and Gloss

Choose between high-gloss, textured, or two-tone finishes to match your personal taste or space. We frequently update our color selections, so be sure to check the latest options on our product listings. Looking for something more unique? Benefits of a Smart Safe for Healthcare Organizations

The safe itself is there to protect your cash from unauthorized individuals, however, there are some additional perks to implementing a smart safe. Let’s go over a few of them.

Streamlined Cash Flow Management

Managing cash manually can be time-consuming and prone to errors. A smart safe automates key aspects of cash handling, such as counting, validating, and depositing funds. This reduces discrepancies and allows healthcare facilities to maintain accurate financial records. Additionally, smart safes can integrate with accounting systems, providing real-time updates on cash flow and minimizing the need for manual reconciliation.

Better Cash Security

Cash theft—whether internal or external—poses a serious risk in any organization that handles physical currency. A smart safe provides advanced security features, including automatic deposit tracking and specific user logins, ensuring that only authorized personnel can access cash. By reducing touchpoints and securing funds until they are transferred to the bank, healthcare facilities can mitigate theft and fraud.

Improved Operational Visibility

Having a clear understanding of cash flow is essential for effective money management for your facility. Smart safes paired with cloud-based cash management software generate detailed transaction reports, giving administrators real-time insight into cash deposits and withdrawals. This increased visibility enables better decision-making, simplifies auditing, and helps you maintain compliance with financial regulations. By eliminating blind spots in cash handling, healthcare organizations can improve financial transparency and efficiency.

In fact, we offer free consultations that allow us to help identify an effective safe solution for your team through an in-depth evaluation of your current cash flow operations.

For organizations that are larger or may have multiple locations, American Security’s cloud-based cash management software helps you gain a higher level of control over your operations. For example, you can set up an array of customizable alerts for the safe’s capacity, when the safe door is left open for an extended period of time, courier pickups, etc.

Our software also allows you to gain access to customizable reporting dashboards so that you have a better, detailed understanding of your cash flow operations.

How American Security’s CashWizard™ Smart Safes Can Help

A smart safe should not only provide your business with advanced technology features, but it should also be built with quality materials that can stand up to unexpected attacks. Here’s a brief overview of what to expect with American Security’s CashWizard™ Smart Safe.

Safe Materials

All of our smart safe models are constructed to stand against forced entry attempts. Our durable construction and impressive locking capabilities classify our smart safes as not just a cash counter, but a secure solution that protects the money your patients bring into your facility on a daily basis.

Reporting Features

If paired with our cloud-based software, American Security smart safes can provide better insight into your cash management operations. Nothing will go unnoticed from the capacity of your safe to the amount of time the door is left open. Alert parameters can be customized to fit your facility’s needs, giving you full control over your smart safe.

Daily Provisional Credit

How our Daily Provisional Credit system works, your deposits don’t have to sit idle until they’re physically collected by the bank. Once cash is placed in the safe, it is counted, validated, and recorded—allowing banks to issue provisional credit for those funds, often on the same day. This means faster access to working capital, improved cash flow, and reduced risk of loss from handling errors or theft.

ChangeExchange®

Managing change efficiently is important for any healthcare facility that accepts cash. ChangeExchange® simplifies the process by allowing businesses to request change as needed. This feature reduces the need for frequent trips to the bank, streamlining cash management and ensuring staff always have the denominations they need.

SureAccess®

SureAccess® provides a seamless, secure way to manage who can access the smart safe. Instead of relying on physical keys or passcodes that can be lost or shared, SureAccess® offers remote authorization capabilities. Administrators can grant or revoke access in real time, ensuring only authorized personnel can handle cash transactions. This is especially helpful for courier pickups, where keys don’t have to be accounted for and they get a temporary code to access the inside of the safe to gather the deposits.

American Security Smart Safe Healthcare Success Story

At American Security, we’ve partnered with healthcare organizations to improve the security and efficiency of their cash management operations. By providing tailored solutions, we help facilities gain the control and visibility they need to manage daily transactions with confidence.

One healthcare provider we worked with operated multiple facilities and handled significant cash volumes across various locations. Their challenge was maintaining a centralized, streamlined approach to cash flow oversight and reporting. What Fill Materials Are Used in Fire-Resistant Safes?

If you’re in the market for a safe, you’ve likely seen many models advertised as fire-resistant. But what sets these safes apart from those without fire protection? The key lies in the fill materials used in their construction.

To help you make an informed decision, let’s break down some of the different types of fire-resistant materials used in safes, along with their advantages and limitations.

Best Fire-Resistant Safe Material: DryLight®

We couldn’t start this off without talking about American Security’s proprietary DryLight® material. DryLight® sets the gold standard for fire-resistant safe materials on the market. This is 19% lighter than drywall, which allows us to strategically incorporate thicker steel that heightens the level of security in safes using DryLight®.

Out of all the fire-resistant materials used in American Security safes, DryLight® provides the best defense against extreme heat and prolonged exposure to high temperatures. It offers continuous, seamless protection by filling the space between steel layers, ensuring there are no weak points where heat can penetrate.

Take a look at some of the American Security safes that feature this industry-leading material:

BFX Series – With enhanced security and a 2-hour fire rating, this model combines our DryLight® material with a rugged composite body.

Fire Clay

Fire clay is another great fire-resistant material to consider after DryLight®. It provides consistent heat insulation and adds weight to the safe, offering significant burglary protection.

Fire clay is renowned for its exceptional heat resistance, making it a standout choice for high-temperature environments such as fires. Used in firebricks for kilns, furnaces, and chimneys, it boasts a remarkable melting point of 3,002°F. Unlike standard materials like drywall, fire clay is 43% denser, offering superior and long-lasting fire protection. Its durability ensures it holds up under extreme heat without breaking down, providing peace of mind where fire resistance matters most.
Here are the American Security safes that offer fire clay as a fire protection barrier.

BFS Series – With a 60-minute ETL fire rating at 1200°F, these safes are constructed with a Cement-based seamless fire and security barrier. With a few different sizes available, you can choose the right BFS safe that fits your current valuables and any future additions you’ll add to your inventory.

Burglary and Fire Safe

UL Series – This product line has UL’s stamp of approval with a 2-hour fire rating, withstanding 1850°F for that period. These models also undergo a drop test of 30’ (the equivalent of a 2-story building).

Explore UL Safes

FS Series – Our FS safes are built with fire clay and are the only safes in their class that come with a UL-rated type 1 lock with a backlit keypad. With a UL fire rating of 60 minutes at 1700°F, this safe can give your cherished items a fighting chance during a house fire.

Explore FS Safes

BF Series – Our BF safes come with a UL RSC Level 1 security rating and a UL fire rating of 60 minutes at 1700°F (BF3416 has an ETL fire rating of 60 minutes at 1200°F). These models will stand strong during forced entry attempts and unforeseen fires.

High Strength and Higher Strength Concrete

Concrete is another robust, fire-resistant material that is commonly used in high-security safes, particularly in our TL-rated models. Because concrete doesn’t burn, it’s an ideal fireproofing material. It also has heat-absorbing and dissipating properties, preventing the internal temperature of the safe from rising too quickly during a fire.

American Security utilizes two different types of high-strength concrete.

TL-15 Concrete (High-Strength Concrete)

  • Has a PSI (pounds per square inch) of at least 6,300, making it 162% denser than standard drywall.
  • Offers superior resistance to both heat and forced entry.

TL-30 Concrete (Higher-Strength Concrete)

  • Has an even more impressive PSI of at least 9,300, making it 172% denser than drywall.
  • Provides extreme durability against fire and high-impact attacks.

For context, a standard sidewalk has a PSI of around 2,500-3,000, meaning these safes use concrete that is at least three times stronger than what supports daily pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Explore our large selection of TL-rated models to uncover the right safe that fits your needs.

Drywall

Drywall, also known as gypsum board, is one of the most commonly used fire-resistant materials in safes. Its fire protection capabilities come from gypsum’s natural composition, which contains water in its crystalline structure. When exposed to high temperatures, this water gradually evaporates, absorbing heat in the process and effectively slowing down the spread of fire. This helps maintain a lower internal temperature inside the safe for some time.

However, while drywall does offer some fire protection, it is not the most effective material for high-security safes. There are a few key drawbacks:

  • Gaps in Construction: Drywall panels are often layered and pieced together rather than forming a seamless barrier. This can create small gaps where heat can infiltrate, reducing overall fire resistance.
  • Lack of an Air-Tight Barrier: Unlike DryLight® or concrete, drywall does not form a completely sealed structure.
  • Lower Durability: While it provides initial fire resistance, drywall lacks the structural strength of more advanced materials like concrete composites, making it a little more vulnerable during high-intensity fires or burglary attempts.

American Security Safes Featuring Drywall-Based Fire Protection

While American Security prioritizes high-performance fire-resistant materials, some models incorporate gypsum-based insulation to provide budget-friendly fire protection for homeowners and businesses.

AMSEC NF Series – Features multiple layers of drywall-based insulation, providing up to 90 minutes of fire protection at 1,200°F.

Explore NF Safes

AMSEC TF Series – A more affordable option for residential security, these safes use drywall-based fire protection to withstand 30 minutes at 1,200°F.

TF

Explore TF Safes

While we mentioned some cons to drywall material, it’s still a useful option for those who may not need or want to invest in a high-security safe that offers the best fire rating. This material found in some of our safes has still passed some rigorous testing and has the potential to stand up to high heat.

Fire-Resistant Safe Materials and Burglary Protection

While fire resistance and burglary protection are often viewed as separate features, the materials used within a safe’s body can significantly impact both. A safe’s security rating is determined by its ability to withstand forced entry attempts, and its internal fire-resistant materials play a key role in reinforcing its overall strength.

For instance, DryLight® insulation, by itself, is specifically engineered for fire protection, not burglary resistance. However, when paired with thicker steel layers, it enhances the overall structural integrity of a safe, making it more resistant to prying, drilling, and impact attacks. This combination allows models like our BF and BFX Series to deliver both fire protection and a reinforced barrier against break-ins.

On the other hand, our TL-15 and TL-30 safes take security a step further by incorporating high-strength concrete composites. These models are built with thick steel walls and filled with high-density concrete, creating a solid core that resists cutting, drilling, and other forms of physical attacks. Concrete’s natural density and compression strength add an extra layer of difficulty for intruders attempting to breach the safe.

By choosing a safe that combines fire-resistant materials with high-security construction, you’re not just protecting valuables from heat—you’re investing in a safe that stands up against both fire and forced entry attempts.

How to Select the Best Fire-Resistant Safe For You

Choosing the right fire-resistant safe comes down to understanding your specific needs and priorities. Whether you’re looking for maximum fire protection, high-security burglary resistance, or a balance of both, the materials used in the safe’s construction will play a crucial role in its performance.

Consider the following factors when selecting your safe:

Fire Protection Needs

If you live in a wildfire-prone area or need to protect documents, valuables, or firearms from extreme heat, investing in a high-performance fire-resistant material like DryLight® or high-strength concrete can provide superior defense.

Security Level

If burglary protection is a top concern, opting for safes with thicker steel and high-strength concrete cores, such as TL-15 and TL-30 models, will offer the best resistance against forced entry.

Ultimately, the best fire-resistant safe is one that aligns with your security priorities and environment. By evaluating what matters most—whether it’s fireproofing, theft deterrence, or a combination of both—you can confidently select a safe that offers the protection and peace of mind you need.

By choosing an American Security safe, you can trust that both fire and burglary protection are built into every model. Our safes are engineered to withstand unforeseen threats, providing reliable defense against heat, theft, and forced entry, giving you peace of mind when it matters most.

AMSEC BFII Safe Burglary Protection

The BFII Series stands out as the only UL Residential Security Container (RSC) Level II rated gun safe on the market, giving it twice the security rating of most traditional gun safes. This prestigious rating signifies that the safe can withstand a 10-minute attack by two technicians using heavy-duty tools such as:

  • Chisels
  • Punches
  • Screws Drivers
  • Hammers (that do not exceed 8 pounds)
  • Pry Bars (that do not exceed 5 feet in length)
  • Picking Tools
  • Portable Mechanical and Electric Tools (including 1/2″ drills)
  • Grinding Points
  • High-Speed and Carbide Drills (that do not exceed 1/2 inch diameter)
  • Pressure-Applying Devices or Mechanisms

The rigorous testing process involves attempting to create a six-square-inch opening in the door or front face of the safe, ensuring its resilience against sophisticated burglary attempts.

AMSEC BFII Safe Fire Protection

The BFII safes have earned an ETL fire rating of 120 minutes at 1200°F, indicating their ability to protect contents during prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The testing process subjects the safe to intense heat to ensure the interior temperature remains below 350°F, safeguarding firearms and other valuables from fire damage. Within the first 8 minutes of the test, the outside temperature reaches the 1200°F mark and in order to pass, the internal temperature needs to remain below 350°F.

The DryLight® material American Security utilizes makes the biggest difference and it’s a huge contributor to how this safe passes the extreme, high-heat ETL testing process.
