BFS Series Safe Manual – ESL10/20 Lock Installation Instructions
This manual applies to the BFS series safes from American Security and provides detailed instructions for installing the ESL10/20 electronic lock. Follow each step carefully to avoid potential lockout or damage to the lock and ensure smooth operation.
Installation Instructions for the ESL10/20 Electronic Safe Locks
The ESL10/20 series lock is a retrofittable electronic safe lock designed to replace conventional mechanical safe combination locks with a similar footprint to U.L. Listed Group 2 locks. Before beginning the installation, review the included operating instructions for the ESL10 or ESL20 lock.
Important Note:
Failure to follow these instructions carefully may result in a lockout. American Security assumes no responsibility for parts damaged during installation. Do not open the sealed lock unit, as breaking the seal voids the manufacturer’s warranty. If the lock is opened, be sure to disconnect the keypad cable first to avoid damaging the electronics. Only use the parts and fasteners included in this kit, and do not attach any auxiliary devices or bolt extensions to the lock.
Tools Required:
Phillips Head Screwdriver
3/16” Hex Allen Wrench or Driver
Non-permanent Thread Locking Compound (e.g., Blue Loctite®)
Supplied Parts:
[1] ESL10/20 Lock Assembly
[2] 8-32 x 3/8” Self-Tap Flat Head Phillips Screws (for Keypad Base mounting)
[3] ¼-20 Socket Head Screws (for Lock mounting)
[3] ¼” Nylon Washers (for Lock mounting)
[2] 8-32 x 5/16” Phillips Head Screws (for Relock Trigger mounting)
Step-by-Step Installation Instructions
Lock the Safe in the OPEN POSITION.
Do not close the safe door until the installation is complete and the lock is tested to confirm proper functioning.
Remove Original Hardware:
Remove the Boltwork Cover, Lock, Dial, and Dial Ring.
If the safe has a back cover-mounted Relock Trigger, save it for attachment to the ESL Lock during assembly. Allow the relocking device to engage the boltwork for now.
Mounting Preparation:
Clean the lock mounting surface of any obstructions, dirt, or oil.
Check the spindle hole front and rear for burrs or sharp edges. The cable requires a ½” diameter hole to pass the connector through the door. Drill or ream if necessary.
Remove any sharp edges or burrs with a file or other tool to prevent cable damage.
Check the lock mounting screw holes for obstructions and, if needed, chase them with a ¼-20 tap.
Ensure the dial mounting screw holes are clear, and chase with an 8-32 tap if necessary.
Prepare the Lock:
Remove the keypad base from the keypad by twisting it about 1/8 turn counterclockwise.
Disconnect the lock cable from the keypad by gently releasing the small tab underneath the connection inside the keypad.
Mount the Keypad Base:
Align the base over the spindle hole, matching the screw holes to the previous dial ring mounting holes.
Use the 8-32 x 3/8” Flat Head Screws to mount the base firmly in place. Be cautious if the safe has a thin face plate, as the threads may strip easily. Use only a hand screwdriver.
Mount the Lock:
Apply a small amount of thread locking compound to the lock mounting screw holes.
Feed the lock cable, connector first, through the door from the inside and position the lock so the cable loops into the channel beneath it.
If the mounting plate is thin (less than ¼”), use the nylon washers under the screw heads for secure installation.
Use a 3/16” hex driver to snug the 3 socket head screws, but do not over-tighten. The thread locking compound will secure the screws when cured.
Verify that the bolt has a minimum 1/16” clearance around it when the boltwork is in the locked position. If clearance is insufficient, modify the opening to prevent intermittent lock operation.
Connect the Keypad:
Plug in the Keypad Assembly and snap it into the Base, coiling the cable in a gentle loop to avoid damage.
Test the Lock:
Test the lock multiple times using the code sequence (C-1-2-3-4-5-6-#) to ensure proper connection and function. The bolt should snap sharply into the unlocked position for about 3 seconds before re-locking.
Check for a red LED flash and beep with each keystroke. The LED should remain lit while the lock is holding.
Mount the Relocking Device:
Use only a hand screwdriver and the provided 8-32 x 5/16” screws to securely mount the relocking device, being careful not to strip the threads.
Final Testing:
Test the lock multiple times to ensure it functions smoothly. Ensure that the lock interacts correctly with the boltwork and that the relock device is secure, not blocking or dragging on the boltwork.
Reassemble and Test:
Replace any boltwork covers and complete the final assembly. Perform several tests before attempting to close and lock the safe door.
Teach the Customer:
Training the customer on proper lock usage is crucial, as 85% of service calls result from incomplete training. Show the customer how to change the battery, reset the combination, and operate the lock correctly.
Be the professional you are. Some important things to remember and instruct your valued customer:
Always turn the handle fully to the locked position to avoid bolt side pressure, ensuring reliable opening.
Use a fresh 9V Alkaline Battery if the lock fails to open. Demonstrate how to replace it without pulling on the cable.
Guide the customer in setting a private combination and ensure they understand the steps fully.
Explain the 15-minute lockout after 4 incorrect attempts. The lock will beep rapidly and flash in lockout mode. Disconnecting power will not reset the timer.
Do not store combinations on paper near the safe. If written, keep it in a secure, separate location.
Avoid liquids and harsh cleaners on the keypad. Use a soft, damp cloth instead.
Instruct the customer to use only fingers to press keys. Sharp objects can damage the keypad, which is not covered by the warranty.
For discreet combination entry, advise that the last keystroke before “#” can be any number sequence as long as the correct key is pressed last (e.g., “C-1-2-3-4-5-6-#”).
