General Safe Questions

I’ve lost my combination. What should I do?

For security reasons, we cannot release a combo to an unknown individual. However, you may contact an American Security registered locksmith or dealer to verify ownership. Click here to find an authorized dealer in your area.

How much will it cost to have a locksmith come to my house or business in order to get the combo or code for my safe?

The charge will depend on where you live. If you have your original sales receipt, try contacting the company you purchased your safe from. They may be able to help you at a discounted rate.

Where can I find my safe’s serial number?

Your safe’s serial number can be found at the front of the safe near one of the four corners.

The door on my safe makes a squeaking sound when I open or close the door.

The hinges on the safe door may need to be lubricated. On smaller safes, you may use a spray lubricant. Larger safes will need to be serviced by a locksmith.

Are your safes fireproof?

We manufacture safes in a variety of classes to meet or exceed standard classification ratings established by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). There is no such thing as a “fireproof safe”. There are only fire resistant safes. Our safes are independently tested by Intertek Laboratories and you’ll find safes in our catalog with fire ratings starting at 60 minutes up to 120 minutes.

What fireproofing material do you use in your safes?

2-hour safe models such as the American Security BFX, BFII and our vault doors use a proprietary fire safe material called DryLight™. DryLight in these safe bodies and doors create a seamless fire barrier providing advanced fire protection over drywall, a material used most commonly in gun safes. American Security still uses drywall in most of its 90, 60 and 45-minute fire rated safes.

Are your safes waterproof?

Safes, by nature, are not waterproof. Our safes are water-resistant.

What if a safe just says “fire rated” but doesn’t state who rated it?

Unfortunately, it’s a common and misleading practice that many safe manufacturers engage in by claiming that their safe is “fire rated” when it’s not. Still others will say that their safes are “tested”. And they may be, but did they pass? American Security verifies all its fire ratings through independent testing via UL and Intertek Laboratories. Many of our safes not only meet, but exceed testing minimums.

What does “U.L. certified RSC” mean?

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, the oldest and best known independent standards testing laboratory in the world. Commonly known by many as gun safes, Residential Security Containers (RSCs) are covered by UL 1037, the Standard for Anti Theft Alarms and Devices. Visit UL to learn more.

Do you still make the series Barrett bfb7250 safes on a special order?

We no longer manufacture the Barrett BRFB, but the BFII is an excellent comparative model. If you’re looking to customize this or any order, contact a safe dealer near you to request a custom safe quote.

Can I just order a BFII 7250 and ask to have the special Barrett interior layout such as the 50 cal M82 rifle slots and the rifle slide out rail feature?

We do custom orders all the time. But we no longer offer slide out rails. Contact a safe dealer near you to request a custom safe quote.
